College Hospital's Adult Psychiatric Services are specifically designed for individuals over 18 years of age who require acute inpatient stabilization of their psychiatric disorder and critical impairments. Adult services programming has demonstrated effectiveness with the following:

  • Major affective disorder with manic or suicidal thoughts and behaviors
  • Dual Diagnosis - concurrent substance and psychiatric occurrences
  • Mood disorders including depression and bipolar episodes
  • Thought disturbances including schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders
  • Behavioral disturbances that impair social functioning

Program Components:

  • College Hospital's behavioral health units offer three separate levels of adult programming allowing patients to enter treatment at appropriate treatment intensity and facilitate transition to higher functioning modalities.
  • Each level is based on a crisis intervention model to stabilize the patient’s condition and transition to a less restrictive environment.
  • Lead by a seasoned physician, the interdisciplinary team plans therapeutic interventions that address the various aspects of the patient’s disorder.
  • Emphasis on patient and family education helps develop more effective communication, interaction, and problem solving.
  • Intensive treatment focus on medication compliance, affect management, conflict resolution, substance abuse relapse prevention and dual diagnosis education.
  • Secured units are available for comprehensive assessment and rapid stabilization.
  • Intensive focus on discharge planning in collaboration with family, community resources, and mental health providers.
